This book was originally published prior to 1923, and represents a reproduction of an important historical work, maintaining the same format as the original work. While some publishers have opted to apply OCR (optical character recognition) technology to the process, we believe this leads to sub-optimal results (frequent typographical errors, strange characters and confusing formatting) and does not adequately preserve the historical character of the original artifact. We believe this work is culturally important in its original archival form. While we strive to adequately clean and digitally enhance the original work, there are occasionally instances where imperfections such as blurred or missing pages, poor pictures or errant marks may have been introduced due to either the quality of the original work or the scanning process itself. Despite these occasional imperfections, we have brought it back into print as part of our ongoing global book preservation commitment, providing customers with access to the best possible historical reprints. We appreciate your understanding of these occasional imperfections, and sincerely hope you enjoy seeing the book in a format as close as possible to that intended by the original publisher.

This novel of daring-do holds up surprisingly well for it's age. The love of horses shown will warm the cockles of anyone familiar with the steeds. And Cigaret is a great character, a noble savage in a different setting. Since this was written during Victoria's range (even though the author is a French woman), the sexual content is implied rather than detailed.Product details

Under two flags 18391908 Ouida Books Reviews
This is wonderful over-the-top romantic tale of love, honour, chivalry & duty which is bound to appeal to lovers of the same & all things royal. Not overly verbose, Ouida does write for her time when romance was not just starlit nights; but, included swashbuckling members of the Legionnaires & their derring-do on the sandswept deserts of North Africa. Read it for the adventure - it is a fairly fast-paced story; albeit, without the Hollywood ending.
Wordy and old fashioned novel. With a far to noble older brother who shields his worthless younger brother from paying for his crime...a crime committed against Noble Brother, the good name of their father...etc. Noble brother "dies", is resurrected in the F.FL. Then he finds out he is the rightful heir to his Father's title. He keeps his Noble mouth shut as things get worse. Martyrdom for good cause might sell but not for unworthy people's salvation. But if this is the sort of thing you like, you may like this.
This is a no-spoilers review, so it may seem vague. Even though Under Two Flags is a classic adventure, made into movies, I didn’t know how it ended when I casually picked up the book—and became instantly addicted. In fact, I never mentioned to anyone that I was reading it, for fear that I might learn the end.
Under Two Flags was a roaring best seller for Ouida. It’s long, as long as the only other Ouida novel I’ve read Moths. You almost get the feeling she was paid by the word, or that the novel was serialized originally.
The plot is far-fetched and silly; the characters, for the most part, are made out of cardboard; her premise that all men love war and “share with the tiger” a love for bloody hand to hand combat is nonsense. And yet I was totally captivated by the story….I’ll tell you why.
It’s the writing! Ouida is a terrific writer. But be warned she is never in a hurry to quit a scene, until she wrings everything out of it, exploring all angles with scrupulous honesty—and illuminating her scenes with believable dialog. She must have had great patience; so must her readers. This very thoroughness can irritate the modern reader, who wants to cut to the chase, but it’s what makes an unlikely plot somewhat believable and even quite suspenseful romantic suspense and plot suspense. Even towards the end, when the outcome is predictable—given the values and mores of her Victorian audience—and as all the characters play out their fates, Ouida manages to maintain the suspense with her characteristic thoroughness of scene development.
The shining light of the novel, the character who holds it all together, the reason that I couldn’t put the book down is “Cigarette.”
Cigarette is one of the most marvelous creations in all of literature. All the other characters pale beside her. She pulls you into, and she pulls you through this wonderful story.
Not my kind of read
This book takes you on a fascinating adventure. Fierce loyalty, noble, unspoken love, bold, brave sacrifice, bitter betrayal, heroic feats, it's all here. There are also strong, capable women around, too. A lot of French words and phrases. The French/English dictionary will only take you so far.
I loved this book. Prepare to be swept away! And keep a hankie nearby.
